Mini guide to Gordons Bay
Gordons Bay is a small, picturesque harbour town situated approximately one hour from Cape Town city centre. The primary attraction here is the beautiful coastline, presenting wonderful opportunities for swimming, fishing, diving or simply relaxing on the beach.
With its intensely blue waters and backdrop of the rugged Hottentots Holland Mountains, Gordons Bay is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the wealth of natural beauty that the Western Cape region has to offer. There are two beaches, the main beach, which is bordered by a long promenade, and the smaller Bikini Beach, boasting an excellent swimming bay. Gordons Bay lies along the stretch of coast that is frequented by whales in the springtime, and a pair of binoculars is a handy accessory for getting a closer look at these benevolent giants.
The seafront is peppered with quaint restaurants, ranging from steakhouses to fish and chips shops and more upmarket seafood restaurants. An eclectic selection of shops selling shells and other souvenirs can be found in town, but a greater selection of fashion stores, sports shops, book shops and more can be found at the nearby Somerset Mall in Somerset West. Additionally, Somerset West encompasses an attractive golf course.
Just 10 minutes away from the town, in the direction of Rooi Els, is the start of a hiking trail that leads, after approximately 45 minutes, to a set of spectacular, multi-tiered mountain pools known as Crystal Pools. The trail continues up the mountain to a plateau on which the large Steenbras Dam is situated. The scenery along the way and the views from the top are nothing short of breathtaking. Farther along the coast, Rooi Els, Bettys Bay and Pringle Bay are equally scenic seaside villages, all with pristine beaches and superb swimming bays.
By car or bus, Gordons Bay is situated just off the N2 highway leading out of Cape Town towards the Garden Route. The closest airport is Cape Town International, approximately 30 minutes away by car.
