Mini guide to Goerlitz
GOERLITZ, GERMANYIf you are looking for a quiet hideaway with rich architectural history, you need to visit the ancient city of Goerlitz. Nestled 778 feet above sea level bordering Poland, it was founded around 1200 AD. The town’s actual foundation is believed to be around 1701. Located in the region of Lusatia, it gradually became a city in the 13th century. Situated on an ancient and medieval trade road, it prospered, and much later became a wealthy member of the Six-City League of upper Lusatia. After suffering for years in the ‘Thirty Year’ War, Goeliz was handed over to Saxony in 1635. After the Napoleonic Wars, Goerlitz was made a part of Prussia from 1815-1945. Despite the divisions that the wars brought, Goerlitz, Germany lies on the right bank of the River Neisse and Zgorzelec, Poland on the west bank have friendly relations.
You can get to Goerlitz by road, air, rail, or water. The main motorway, A13, connects Dresden and Berlin and by car you can travel to Goerlitz. We recommend that day visitors park their cars on the edge of the city and travel by bus, suburban, train or tram. Dresden International Airport is a bustling hub serviced by many carriers, including Air Berlin, Air Europa, BMI, and United Airlines. Daily connections by rail from Dresden will take you to all major cities. If you have a lot of time, take a cruise on one of the major European cruise lines.
Once you arrive at Goerlitz, you will find charming hotels quietly located near the heart of the ancient city. There are also lovely hotels with all the modern comforts for the livelier visitors as well. Famous for its exquisite double sundial or astronomical clock and gothic buildings, you’ll want to take a walking tour to enjoy these enormous city attractions. You’ll see buildings decorated with weather vanes of multiple figures, classical towers, fountains, and the view of the Neisse River dividing Poland and Germany.
Known for its museums, important libraries, and theaters, you will want to take a tour bus to explore the University of Goerlitz/Zittan, Zoo Goerlitz, Historic Karstadt, Theatre Goerlitz, Main Train Station Goerlitz, and the Schonhof, one of the oldest civil renaissance buildings in Germany.
Also known for its optical and precision instruments you’ll want to visit one of the manufacturing companies while you’re there. Being on the River Neisse, you can participate in some of the many water sports. If you travel in the winter months you’ll need some warm clothes, because the climate is temperate with an average temperatures of 30 degrees Fahrenheit, scattered clouds and light winds. In July expect the temperature to be around 64 degrees Fahrenheit.
