A small picturesque Surrey town with many narrow interesting streets lined with ancient and historic buildings, Godalming is located within beautiful rolling countryside. It is an ideal location to explore local areas of outstanding natural beauty, as well as providing a pleasant and relaxing village atmosphere in which to take a leisurely stroll.
High Street is home to the famous Pepperpot building, formerly the Town Hall built in 1814. It is located opposite Godalming Museum where you can find out more about famous personalities from the towns past. People of note include the renowned gardener and artist Gertrude Jeckyll, and John Phillips who was the wireless operator on the doomed Titanic. Further down the high street is the timber-framed 16th century White Hart Inn in which Dick Turpin reputedly stayed. Church Street is home to the parish church which dates back to the 10th century, as well as the 16th century Church House, and The Priory.
For the quintessential English tea in Godalming, visit Farncombe Boathouse Tea-room at Catteshall Lock for elevenses, lunch or afternoon tea. Alternatively, for an international dining experience, the High Street is home to a Greek Taverna as well as both Indian and Italian restaurants. For the health-conscious, Godalming Leisure Centre located at Broadwater Park, Farncombe, and has a pool, fitness studio, squash courts, sunbeds and a sauna.
Around the town are many fine walks in the surrounding hills and by the river. From the Church, you can take a ramble upstream to the ancient bridge at Eashing or downstream to the Ram Cider House at Catteshall. Godalming is also a perfect base to visit other Surrey attractions such as Chessington World of Adventures, a popular theme park on Leatherhead Road in Chessington, Surrey.
Godalming is less than an hours drive from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports, both of which offer daily flights from many international destinations. Trains depart twice hourly from London Waterloo station (duration 45 minutes). Motorists can easily reach the town using the southwest bound A3 which is accessed from junction 10 of the M25 London ringroad.
