Car Hire Giulianova - Mini guide to Giulianova
Located near the site of the ancient city of Castrum Novum (circa 290 BC) is the modern day town of Giulianova. Found on the coast in the province of Teramo, in the region of Abruzzo, the population of Giulianova were moved there from Castrum Novum during the Middle Ages. In 1001, the remains of the Bishop of Constantinople were moved there, and the town took on the name of the bishop to change from Castrum Novum to Castel San Flaviano.
Between then, and the 1200s, the town moved further up the hill so as to be in a better position to defend itself. When the town was destroyed in a battle in 1460, it took 10 years before duke Giuliantonio Acquaviva built a new town (and called it Guila, after himself) on the hill, instead of just rebuilding the town centre. The new town had very high walls and seven towers for fortification – one is still around nowadays.
Sandwiched between the rivers of Salinello and Tordino, the beaches along the strip of land that is Giulianova are some of the best in the area. There are two parts to the town of Giulianova: the newer lido dated back to the early 1900s and located near the railway station and fishing port, and the older ‘Paese’ (or Giulianova Alta), located in the hills and dated back to the 1800s.
Giulianova draws many tourists from places such as Germany and France, and offers many three-plus star resorts located along the beaches. Indeed, tourism plays an important part in the ecomony of Giulianova. Giulianova is easily accessible from Teramo by car, not quite 30 kilometres, or by train or bus from Ancona or Pescara.
Giulianova has many attractions, from old churches (some dating back to the 1100s) to castles and towers. There are also several festivals held throughout the year, so be sure to schedule one in for your holiday!
