Situated on the Loire river, 50 miles from Orleans, Gien is a commune in France which was once bought by Philip II as royal property. This town has long been renowned for its fine china, which is presently manufactured in a large factory with over 200 employees.

The town of Gien is rather pretty, having been restructured to its late 15th century charm after massive wartime bombing. The 16th century stone bridge that spans the river provides outstanding panoramas as you access from the south.

Gien’s major highlight is its 15th century black- and red-brick chateau where the young Louis XIV hid with his mother Anne of Austria during the revolts against taxations. The chateau itself is fairly modest, but atypical in its brick construction. It has been altered into the Musée International de la Chasse et de la Nature which displays innumerable items revering hunting such as guns, falconers’ gear, hunting horns and tapestries.

The Musée de la Faïencerie exhibits extravagant vases, plates and ceramic bits and pieces produced in the past 180 or so years, while a video shows present fabrication techniques. You can purchase the ordinary crockery, some of it eye-catching enough, in the factory shop adjacent to the museum.

There is limited and usually slow public transportation in Gien which can be inconvenient for visitors to use.
