Gibraltar airport is located only 500 meters from the city center. While it is owned by the MOD for the use of the RAF, civilian operators also use it and currently flights operate to both the UK and Spain. The runway is situated on the Spanish side of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar’s airport is small when compared to others, but it does have a shopping area and an information center contained within it. Taxis are also plentiful directly outside the civilian terminal building and there is a bus stop for buses to the city center. Since the airport is directly on the border with Spain (one must cross the actual runway to get there), getting to the Spanish mainland is but a short walk away. There is also a car park located opposite the terminal building for both long and short-term parking. If you are arriving by airplane and wish to enter the Spanish side of Gibraltar, you will have to walk over the border and take a Spanish taxi since Gibraltar taxis are not permitted to enter Spain.

Gibraltar airport is conveniently located near the center of town, so getting around is easy. There is a regular bus service as well as taxis. From the town center, you can head off for a host of sightseeing activities. The Southgates are one such point of interest. A part of the old walls and fortifications line the town; the original gates were built in 1551. It was in this area that the pirate, Barbarossa, attacked Gibraltar and captured many of its people to sell as slaves; Parson’s Lodge is another building worth visiting. It sits high on a hill overlooking the straits of Gibraltar; below it is the only natural bay in Gibraltar and that is the reason the lodge was fortified. Comprised of many underground tunnels and passageways, it is open from 10am to 7pm every day except Monday.

Of course, no trip to Gibraltar would be complete without a visit to the “Rock.” Gibraltar's most famous and most visible sight is the 426m high Rock. From the viewing terraces at the top of the Rock you can enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, not to mention the Spanish city of Algeciras. Make sure you take the “Rock tour,” as many of Gibraltar’s best sites can only be found there, including the famous Barbary apes, the tailless monkeys, that roam free in a cave mid-way up the rock.
