Gibraltar Car Hire Guide
Gibraltar is small with lots of taxis, buses, and guide tours. Hiring a car is only really worthwhile if planning to cross the border into Spain. Once in Spain you can tour the whole of Andalusia, or even drive up to Portugal. If renting a car in Gibraltar be sure to fill up on fuel before leaving, being a tax haven means prices in Gib are significantly cheaper then across the border in Spain. The cheapest car hire in Gibraltar can be found at the Airport.
Gibraltar is a tiny British colony lies off the southernmost tip of Spain and is home to an interesting mix of cultures and histories; a little piece of the European continent with sizeable British and Moroccan minorities, but populated mostly by Gibraltarians. To the east are the Costa del Sol and the Mediterranean; to the west lies the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean; to the south is Morocco. For such a small place there’s a great deal to see and do.
The Gibraltar Museum has good historical, architectural and military displays, including a well-preserved Muslim bathhouse and a detailed model of the Rock made in the 1860s. In the town centre around the museum, you can still see British fortifications, gates and gun emplacements. Most Spanish and Islamic buildings were destroyed in the 18th century sieges.
In addition to all the walking to be done around the Rock, you can take advantage of sailing the waters around Gibraltar. The Bahía de Algeciras has a sizable population of dolphins, and several boats make two or more daily trips out to see them. Most go from Watergardens Quay or adjacent Marina Bay. You'll be unlucky if you don't get plenty of close-up dolphin contact.
The Bay curves around to a pair of capes – Malabata to the east, Spartel to the west, both making a pleasant detour if you have some time to spare.
