Forming part of the greater Johannesburg metropolitan area, Germiston, the sixth-largest ‘city’ in South Africa, and mainly a commercial and industrial town, situated within easy accessibility of Johannesburg. Its primary attraction is Germiston Lake, located close to the heart of the city.
The lake, surrounded by scenic parklands, provides marvellous opportunities for family fun, with a wide range of water sports and leisure possibilities, including sailing, picnicking and a children’s playground. The nearby Rondebult Bird Sanctuary is a rare wetland area that is home to numerous species of birds and some mammals, such as zebra, blesbok, reedbuck and springbok.
The city features a number of museums and art galleries, and nearby Katlehong township houses the Katlehong Art Centre, well worth a visit.
Apart from the leisure opportunities presented by Germiston Lake, Gilloolys Farm, in Bedfordview, offers barbeque facilities, a children’s play area, a family golf centre and a restaurant. There is a bass dam that is popular with fishermen, and regular events such as dog shows are held here. Gosforth Park Racecourse hosts regular horseracing events. Additionally, there is a well-manicured, 18-hole golf course which incorporates the Germiston Lake on the par-three 15th and 17th holes.
Eastgate Shopping Center in Bedfordview offers an array of tempting shops, some of which specialise in traditional African curios, jewellery and artworks. Alternatively, the nearby Bruma Lake shopping complex is situated opposite the Bruma Lake flea market, which features hundreds of stalls selling all manner of goods, and is open every day of the week.
Johannesburg city centre, with its vast range of cultural and historical attractions, and multitude of fine restaurants and social and theatrical venues, is just a short drive away. The township of Soweto, which played a significant role in the apartheid struggle, is another noteworthy attraction nearby.
Germiston has excellent access to all the major highways heading north, south, east or west. Johannesburg International Airport and Rand Airport are both situated in close proximity to Germiston.
