Car Hire in Geneva - Getting to Geneva

With so many international organizations based in Geneva, it’s airport is an important transport hub for Europe and has flights to many major cities worldwide. Modern and efficient, with excellent facilities, the airport meets the standards expected of it by all the important diplomats passing through. Transport into the city is reliable and frequent but don’t expect it to be cheap. Many arrivals use limo services and private taxis as the regular mode of transport. Switzerland’s bus services are comprehensive and efficient. Within the city trams are used as an environmentally-friendly alternative.

There are regular trains and buses to all neighbouring countries from Geneva, but the most frequent services run to nearby France (via the Rhone valley) and Italy. It’s possible to travel non-stop to Spain and UK. Wherever you travel from within Switzerland, the scenery is so breathtaking that you hardly notice the journey. Swiss trains are fast and efficient but not cheap.

Trains run several times a day to Zurich via Bern, and several other major cities, while buses services smaller destinations.

Roads are safe and well-maintained in Switzerland with an excellent network. Don’t expect state-side highways, and budget plenty of time for the journey, as routes tend to wind their way through the mountains with many switchbacks and dangerous corners, local drivers are non-the-less responsible on the whole.

A programme sponsored by the Red Cross even offers free bikes in the city during the summer to encourage cycling instead of driving.
