Car Hire Gela - Mini guide to Gela

84 kilometres from the Mediterranean Seaside city of Caltanissetta, lies the city of Gela, in the province of Caltanissetta, in the region of Sicily. Gela has a larger population that Caltanissetta, is second to it in land area, and can be reached by train from Caltanissetta. The most important industry in Gela is that of petrol refining, although there are other industries located in Gela – being a port town, most trade is done by the sea.

Gela was settled in about 688 BC by people from Rhodes and Crete, about 45 years after the settlement of Syracuse, and was named for the River Gela. Approximately 10 kilometres from the town is the castle known as ‘Casteluccio’, or ‘small castle’. It was built in the early 1200s, and is a popular tourist destination. So too is the cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Virgin Assunta, and rebuilt in 1766 over an existing church dedicated to Madonna della Platea. There are also several Greek temples and an archaeological site that are popular attractions, so be sure to include them on your list of things to see and do in Gela.

Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy (it is the part of Italy hanging off the end of the ‘boot’), and covers the largest land area of all the 20 regions in Italy. Cicero described Siracusa as the ‘greatest and most beautiful city in all of Ancient Greece’. Sicily is also home to the Necropolis of Pantalica, a burial place containing about 5000 tombs dating from the 13th to the 7th centuries BC. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

For the foodie, Sicily has a great, varied cuisine, and has often been called ‘God’s Kitchen’. Due to its location, the island has a huge variety of influences: Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Arabs, and even the Normans and Spanish have had a hand in the flavours found in Sicily.
