Garda is a municipality in the Veneto region's province of Verona. It is located on the shores of Lake Garda, which is the largest lake in Italy. Garda as a township is located on the SR 249, so it is easily accessed by car or taxi (or even coach). And with a substantial ferry service all over the lake, you're not short of a scenic way to see the sites, or simply get from point A to point B.
Lake Garda is situated halfway between Venice and Milan, and was formed by the melting of a large glacier at the end of the last Ice Age. The presence of a large number of tourist resorts and holiday parks along the shores give testament to the lake's popularity as a holiday area. There are five islands on the lake, and the Sarca River flows in, while only the Mincio River flows out. There exists in the lake a species of salmon only found in this lake and a few Swiss lakes, as well as other species of fish such as trout and pike, and eel.
Many other communes are located on the shores of the lake, the communes coming from the provinces of Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, as well as Verona. In and around Lake Garda are found many attractions - literally something for everyone! From restaurants with cuisine to tempt and satisfy even the fussiest eaters, to watersports such as skiing and parasailing, fishing to yachting, and let's not forget the land sports and sites. Castles, historic old buildings, and destinations to amuse, move, and tire you out.
Base yourself at Garda and take yourself horse-riding - imagine galloping through the pristine waters, then relaxing afterwards by the water with a picnic lunch, or in a cafe with a coffee and light lunch. If golfing is more to your liking, then rest assured there are plenty of courses for you to choose from - if you can concentrate on the golf and not be distracted by the gorgeous lake views. There is really something for everyone at Garda and its beautiful lake!
