Car Rental Fuerteventura - Exploring Fuerteventura
La Oliva is the capital of the island. It is a beautiful little town with all modern amenities available and a lively bar and restaurant scene every evening. Most activities and tours are best organised from here, unless you fancy hiring a car and touring the island for yourself.
Fuerteventura's former capital, Betancuria, lies in a picturesque valley alongside a long dry river bed. In 1593 it was reduced to a pile of rubble by an attack from the pirate Jaban, and was not fully restored until 1691.
On the main street running through the town is the Casa Museo Arquebiologico, which contains a collection of fascinating archeological finds. Highlights include: statues of fertility gods and an idol frieze. The Centro Insular de Artesania, next to the museum, documents traditional arts and crafts.
If you visit the 'Casa Santa Maria' you can watch the local artists at work and even purchase some of the hand-made products from the local shop.
Tefia is a small village to the south of La Oliva and home to the new 'eco museum' La Alcogida. This fascinating place is based upon an old Canarian village and gives an insight into how life was once lived on Fuerteventura.
Situated in the north, Corralejo is a lively and colourful town; it has a great nightlife and is one of the most popular resorts on the island.
There are still white sandy beaches in the town centre where you can soak up the Canarian sunshine. Just out of town, the dunes are a protected nature reserve and spread for miles along the east coast.
Corralejo caters for all ages and there are a wide variety of things to do, including watersports, glass bottom boat trips, ferry trips to Lanzarote, jeep safaris, mountain biking and motorbike tours.
