Friedrichsdorf is an eclectic mix of industry, people, and landscape. With a population of 25,000 and a history dating back to 1687. The primary reason for the initial influx of people to the land was when the French Hugeunots were being persecuted and millions of them fled, some landing in what is now Friedrichsdorf. These refuges of sorts called the land theirs and brought stockings and flannel with them which became very popular, and the demand sharply increased as a result. The most famous native of the town was a man named Philipp Reis, who was an instructor at the Institut Garnier and had a love of engineering. He is known as the inventor of the telephone, and there is a museum named in his honor which attracts visitors from all over the country each year.

A unique aspect of the town is that is much larger than it was originally geography wise because Friedrichsdorf merged with Seulberg, Koppem, and Burgholzhausen in 1972 after it was decided money could be saved and amenities shared if the merger took place. This larger area has afforded the town more room for future growth, and made it attractive to businesses thinking of moving into the area to set up shop. Another important feature of the town is the major traffic artery that runs along the outskirts of town and flows into other municipal areas creating an efficient transport channel and commuter route. Rail transport is also a major asset as there are many efficient routes to and from Friedrichsdorf. This also makes it easy for visitors to come into the city for a day or an extended stay.

Hotels are abundant as are inns and shopping venues, and there are landmarks to visit while in Friedrichsdorf. The large Temple of the Church of Latter Day Saints is one of two that stand in Germany, and serve a large evangelical community. The old town halls from the original towns are also interesting to view as are some of the other older buildings in the downtown area. The weather is mixed here and sunshine is tempered with rain and a temperature range from the mid 20’s to lower 60’s during the summer months.
