Exploring Fresno
With Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite national parks, as well as the Sierra Nevada Mountains all within easy driving accessibility of Fresno, visitors to the town have the opportunity to explore some of the states most magical environments.
Sequoia National Park and the adjacent Kings Canyon National Park form a wonderful scenic retreat featuring exquisite lakes, densely forested areas, large caves and the deepest canyon in the United States. Additionally, the largest groves of giant sequoias in the Sierra Nevada range can be found at Grant Grove and Giant Forest.
Giant Forest is home to General Sherman Tree, the biggest living organism known to mankind. This amazing tree is a natural marvel, with branches reaching a thickness of two metres. Moro Rock, with its marvellous views, is another highlight of the area.
Sierra National Forest is situated approximately 70kms east of Fresno, and is an idyllic mountain getaway where visitors can enjoy hiking, skiing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, swimming and camping. This gorgeous wilderness area is made up of towering mountain peaks, beautiful lakes, fields of wildflowers and deep canyons.
About 100kms from Fresno is Yosemite National Park, featuring forested areas and open fields, giant sequoia trees, three of the worlds highest waterfalls, and imposing granite cliffs, including El Capitan, the biggest and tallest piece of granite on the planet.
Rock-climbers come from far corners of the globe to test their skills on this vast, vertical challenge. Wawonas history centre and historical hotel provide insight into the development of the region, and Glacier Point affords a visual feast of Yosemite Valley and the high country.
Lake Tahoe lies farther north on the border between California and Nevada. Leisure opportunities abound on what is the biggest alpine lake in America, and include swimming, sailing, hiking, skiing and camping. There is also an array of casinos on the lakes eastern shores.
