Located on the Côte d'Azur in southern France, above the alluvial plains that separate the Maures mountains from the Esterel hills, Frejus is an ancient Roman city and military port. At equal distance between St Tropez and Cannes, this city of art and culture has been a dynamic place since Julius Caesar himself created it in 49 BC.
Frejus boasts some famous Roman sites, above all Forum Julii featuring several ruins of outstanding archaeological value. One of the country’s most spacious amphitheatres from Gallic times rests here, dating back to the 1st or 2nd century, and there are the remains of a remarkable aqueduct with extremely high, massive pillars; a Roman theatre and the arcades of the Oree Gate.
Another tourist draw is the Church of St Maximinus, which was erected between the 13th and 15th century and presents a significant sample of pointed structural design in southern France. The cathedral of Frejus is built of beautiful old stone and is centrally set in a lovely square, while the Chapel Cocteau was visualised by Jean Cocteau in 1961 and completed by E Dermit in 1965.
Placed a couple of miles from the fine, sandy beaches between the city and St Raphaël, Frejus is also a popular summertime tourist spot. There are various walks to enjoy, particularly to the renowned Malpasset dam which burst in 1959 and partly destroyed the city.
