Car Hire Freilassing - Mini guide to Freilassing

Freilassing

Freilassing is a town of 16,000 residents which is located on the far southeastern border of Bavaria, Germany. Just on the other side of that shared border is the famous Austria, making this town a popular spot for tourists to stop. Freilassing was first documented and acknowledged as a village in 885 by the Celts, but the borders changed significantly over the centuries depending on the rivers on either side, and eventually the railway. Modern transportation by rail is the primary reason the town appears as it does on a map today, since the town grew around the station to the river borders.

The downside of the border location and centricality of the rail system had its downside, and became a target for Allied Forces during World War II. In 1945, the town was destroyed after being bombed by both American and German forces, and only started to gain back it’s population in the mid-1950’s when the population reached 7,700. Since then, the population has doubled, and Freilassing is once again a beautiful border town.

Traditionally, cattle farming and the railway were the primary resource for jobs in Freilassing. With the change of the railroad industry, many of the railway jobs were eliminated and today the town is home to small and mid sized companies with a heavy focus on engineering firms. Living here is affordable and there is not a lack of things to do in your spare time.

First, the mountains provide a lovely place to hike, picnic, or just view and photographers love to come just after the spring rainy season to take pictures of the foliage. The town itself provides quaint shops, pubs and eateries, and quiet streets to explore which are busy much of the year because of the moderate climate. Families abound here, and the small school system is considered strong, as is the economy. The town is far enough from big city life, but close enough to regional highways that you can travel to other parts of Germany as well as Austria.
