Mini guide to Frankfurt
Frankfurt is Germanys air hub, and many of the countrys visitors spend time in this busy commercial city. With plenty of historical buildings and fine museums, and lively entertainment, the city is a worthwhile tourist destination.
Frankfurt lies in a scenic valley between Hamburg and the Alps. On the north bank of the Main river is the busy financial and business sector, and the red-light district, while the south side has a more relaxed atmosphere and is easier to explore by foot. Fifteen minutes east of here is the charming heart of the city, the Altstadt (old town), with lovely sidewalk cafes and historical buildings. The Historisches Museum has interesting exhibits of pre-and postwar Frankfurt, and the nearby Goethemuseum is the former home and current guardian of the writers greatest works. The Museum Embankment is on the south bank, with a wide selection of art, film and war museums. South Bank Sachsenhausen is full of the rustic charm of Old Germany, and across the river is Schweitzer Strasse, the best area for up-market boutiques and cosmopolitan restaurants. East of Schweitzer Platz is the pub-crawler's paradise of Alt-Sachsenhausen where you can sample Frankfurt's famous apple wine. By car you can visit and explore the restored Opera House, the affluent Nordend suburb, Holzhausen Park, Hauptfriedhof cemetery and Frankfurter Stadtwald.
