Ten kilometers west of Frankfurt, Hoechst is a charming town filled with magnificent Baroque palaces and buildings, as well as the chilling Behrens Building (constructed for Hoechst Chemicals), and the Town Castle, where there is a lively street festival and local market. Around nearly every street corner are delightful, typically German taverns serving the regions famous apple wine.
The Lohrberg is an excellent daytrip northeast of the city, with breathtaking views of Frankfurt and a lovely beergarden. Its a short, steep drive with available parking. During the winter months adrenaline-junkies can sled down this hill. On the way back into the Altstadt is Bornheim, well-known for its trendy cafes, and mouthwatering German delicacies.
A short drive northwest of Frankfurt takes you to Bockenheim, the beautiful University area with an alternative vibe. At night the streets come alive with folk dancing and local bands.
A few hours east you can discover the Rhines evocative scenery which lies between Mainz and Koblenz. Here you'll find dramatic landscapes with fertile vineyards clinging to steep hills, numerous imposing castles and dreamy wine-producing villages.
