Mini guide to Frankenthal
FrankenthalThe town of Frankenthal is situated in southwestern Germany, and has a history dating all the way back to 772 when it was established as a fishing settlement. Until 1119 it was home to a powerful Augustinian monastery, but then was passed to the Palatinate in 1562, when it was settled by Dutch Protestant refugees. Parts of the ancient monastery still stand today as part of the historic town center, and serve as a reminder of the rocky past the town has survived. In the latter part of the 16th century, people from the Netherlands settled in Frankenthal after being persecuted for their devout religious beliefs. It was this group of industrious people that laid the firm foundation and thriving economy that Frankenthal enjoys to this day.
The town has a population of 47,000 and has many places to visit that will give you a sense of the diverse culture. The city center, remains of the monastery wall, various places of worship, and museums are all interesting ways to spend some time in Frankenthal. You will also notice that many medium size companies make their home here, and manufacture such items as porcelain to silk, to various metals. The cost of living here is moderate as is the climate, making it a good place to live and raise a family. The many roads and highways lead to other more populous parts of Germany, and the mass transit systems includes railways, buses, and taxi service to get you where you need to go.
Because the town is located in the southwest quadrant of Germany, it became a crossroad of sorts for all types of people during World War II. Europeans found shelter here as they fled their own country, and Germans found peace here from some of the fighting. Many of these residents stayed and started families and businesses, and enjoyed the close proximity to other European countries. Tourists also love this aspect of the geography, and it is not uncommon to find travelers staying a day or two at one of the many hotels and inns.
