Exploring Fort Worth
If the sound of the Tarantula Train doesnt appeal to you, you may prefer to visit the town of Grapevine by car. Grapevine, the oldest settlement in Tarrant county, is situated east of Fort Worth, on Northwest Parkway, and is home to the Cotton Belt Depot, now the Grapevine Heritage Centre, where artisans demonstrate and teach their crafts. The town was named for the tart Mustang grapes that once grew wild here.
Also to the east, but on Interstate 30, is Arlington, where the Hurricane Harbour water park and the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park provide good, old fashioned family fun. The town is also likely to appeal to sports fanatics, as it is the hometown of the Texas Rangers baseball team, who play regularly at Arlingtons Ballpark. The Traders Village is a fantastic, year round market where you can pick up bargains on an eclectic assortment of items, ranging from antiques to animals and more, from a vast assemblage of 1,600 stallholders.
Continuing farther east youll come across Grand Prairie, where you can amuse yourself at the Palace of Wax/Ripleys Believe It Or Not, or view live first class horse-racing at Lone Star Park.
Nature lovers should make their way to the Fort Worth Nature Centre and Refuge, only 16kms northwest of Forth Worth central. Forty kilometres of trails wind through this area, where native flora and fauna abound, including Texas wildflowers, buffalo and white-tailed deer. You can explore this lovely scenic area on your own, or join one of the affordable guided walking tours.
At Cresson, located south of town on Highway 377, you can find the Pate Museum of Transportation, with informative exhibits and memorabilia on the subject. Providing interesting information in a similar vein is the American Airlines CR Smith Museum, lying southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.
