Car Rentals Finland - Weather in Finland
The main factor influencing Finlands climate is its geographical position giving it both maritime and a continental climate. The temperature therefore tends to be warmer than other countries on the same latitude. Winters (October April) in Finland can get incredibly cold however, with temperatures remaining below 0 degrees throughout and dropping to - 40 degrees in some places.
If you move north of the Arctic Circle you will experience a phenomena called polar night with the sun not even making it over the horizon, so eternal darkness and a strange bluish light prevails. In the northern extreme, this lasts for many weeks but in the south the shortest day is 6 hours. Snow falls are experienced as soon as winter begins with the deepest snow falling around early March so ski season only really kicks off around February. In spring (April May) the temperatures rise to about 10 degrees and snow melts after roughly 2 weeks. Summer (May September) has warm temperatures reaching at times into the 30s and this is also a time to enjoy the polar sun with the sun never setting at all. In Autumn (August September) the temperatures tend to remain below 10 degrees.
Lapland is a popular place to experience the strange borealis (northern lights) phenomenon.
