Despite being out of the way Helsinki has a surprising number of flight options with regular daily flights to all European centers and several convenient trans-Atlantic routes. In addition there are flights to all major Asian cities and even as far as Sydney. All together 22 airlines land here, and connections to other centers in Finland are regular. Its possible to fly to several European destinations from other cities in Finland. The airport is conveniently connected to Helsinki with a regular bus service, taking about 30 minutes or less.
Rail options are limited, Finland is surrounded by sea and only borders Sweden in the sparsely populated north. The trans-Siberian railway departs for Russia and you can even go as far as China if you dared, but rail travel in Russia is chaotic and tourist visas are still a bit of a racket.
Buses run from Helsinki to many Baltic destinations, usually with a ferry crossing involved. The most regular land departures head for St Petersburg.
Baltic ferries run from Sweden, Estonia and Germany to Helsinki and Turku. The ferries are modern, comfortable and well-stocked, including an impressive array of duty free shopping and even casinos.
