Rent a Car Finland - Geography Finland
Finland lies between Sweden and Russia and is Europes seventh largest country. It is mostly flat with huge forests and lakes, except for the arctic zone in the extreme north. The landscape ranges from the flat western coast of Ostrobothnia to the thickly forested area of Kainuu and gradually rising fells of Lapland. The greatest treasures of its landscape however are its archipelagos on the west coast with over 20,000 islands. The southern district is dominated by post glacial lakes with roughly 10% of the country covered by water.
Nature abounds in Finland due to the low population density. The flora is rich and lush with densely forested areas in low lying valleys. The main forests consist of pine, spruce and birch. The bear is considered the king of the Finish forests and is respected and feared. Other animals include elks, foxes, lynxes, lemmings, beavers and hedgehogs. In Lapland, far to the north, the indigenous Sami people still tend their reindeer herds. Bird life also flourishes in the forests with cranes and many birds of prey.
