Car Rental Finland - Exploring Finland
There are literally thousands of lakes in Finlands southern hinterland, criss-crossed with roads, making it a beautiful country to explore in the summer.
Olavinlinna Castle is situated in the lovely Savonlinna lakes area. It has a curious history, built in 1475 to protect the country from the Russians, but their neighbours ended occupying it anyway. During their 200 year residency, the Russians added their own distinctly-styled additions. Two small museums in the castle have exhibits on its history plus displays of orthodox treasures. Also in this region is the lovely Kolovesi National Park, which includes several well-preserved islands covered in pine. People travel here to seek out the prehistoric paintings on rocks.
Åland is an island and independent province in the Gulf of Bothnia, between Sweden and Finland. It has distinctive culture, and language. Popular with the locals in summer, it is perfect for camping and cycling. The impressive Kastelholm Castle is found in the town of Sund and dates from before the 16th century. Other attractions include the ruins of Bomarsund Fortress and intriguing open-air Jan Karlsgården Museum.
Far north, in Lapland, the pleasant lakeside town of Inari is famous for its Sami culture. It too features an open-air museum showing Finalnds old, traditional, way of life. Ukko Island, an ancient cultic site, is a popular day trip. Also situated in Lapland is Lemmenjoki National Park, characterized by desolate wilderness rivers, arctic landscape and excellent trekking. Ravadasköngäs waterfall, is the parks highlight.
