Car Rental Fiji - Exploring Fiji
A car unfortunately isnt going to get you very far among this archipelago, and chartering a sailboat is the best way to truly explore the unspoilt and deserted outer islands.
Vanau Levu, the other significant island, is volcanic, largely wild and undeveloped with a distinctive rural way of life. Its great for trekking and has excellent snorkeling but limited beaches. There are also traces of ancient civilization at Dakuniba.
Levuka, on the island of Ovalau, is close to Viti Levu and was originally the capital. Somewhat past its prime, it has colonial charm and a pretty setting squeezed between mountain and sea. Nearby, Lovoni is a bizarre village settled in a spectacular extinct volcanic crater.
On the opposite side of Viti Levu (west) is the Mamanuca Group. Resorts are scattered across the various islands and there are plenty of lovely beaches and excellent snorkeling spots.
The other islands are more difficult to reach but are obviously quiet and rewarding. The Lau Group is scattered across the south western perimeter of Fijis territory. Vanuabalavu, the largest, is a protected area with several resorts and an airfield.. Many of the other islands are private, but have resorts on them.
The Kadavu Group are even more remote and undeveloped, situated in the southern Koro sea, but are restricted to private yachts.
