Fargo and Moorhead, in North Dakota and Minnesota respectively, are separated by the Red River. Interstate 94 (east-west) and Interstate 29 (north-south) are the major highways that cross these cities. I-94 goes east to Minneapolis in Minnesota, through Milwaukee in Wisconsin, and Chicago in Illinois, and on to Detroit, Michigan.
To the west, I-94 runs through the Badlands of North Dakota and in Montana joins with I-90, which goes on to Seattle, Washington. I-29 comes down from Canada and continues through Fargo, Sioux Falls and farther south to Omaha, Nebraska and Kansas City.
Another more scenic route is the drive along Minnesota Highway 220 and US Highway 75, through Climax and Georgetown to Moorhead, and then on to Fargo.
Amtrak trains pass through Fargo on their Chicago-Seattle/Portland runs. From these cities it is possible to get to a wide range of destinations throughout the country. From Chicago, trains travel to the east and south, and from Seattle or Portland you can reach points along the west coast, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.
