Exploring Fargo
Located directly across the Red River from Fargo is Moorhead, known as Fargos sister city in the state of Minnesota. Attractions abound here too, the most notable of which is arguably the Hjemkomst Interpretive Centre.
On display here is a handcrafted replica Viking ship, built by Robert Asp, who dreamed of sailing it to Norway, the land of his ancestors. The centre also contains photographs and film documentation of the construction of the ship and its amazing 9,600-kilometre voyage across the Atlantic in 1982.
On the lower level of the centre is the Clay County Museum and Archives, with galleries featuring changing displays dealing with local history topics. There are also other attractions on the grounds of the centre, including a new stavkirke, a Norwegian style church built using log columns as support. Another exhibit, the historic Comstock House, is a beautiful old building dating back to 1882, and containing its original, elegant furnishings.
The Maple River Winery, approximately 30kms from Fargo, is known throughout the state of North Dakota. This unique winery makes wines from fruits indigenous to North Dakota, such as chokeberry, wild plum and apple jalapeño pepper. The wines range from sweet to dry to completely original, providing a range of flavours to appeal to all tastes.
Fans of the outdoors will be thrilled with the options that the area around Fargo provides. Popular pursuits include hiking through Buffalo River State Park, or taking a cruise on the Red River with SS Ruby Pontoon Tours. Buffalo River Dude Ranch, near Glyndon in Minnesota, offers guided horseback rides along the scenic Buffalo River.
In North Dakota, hiking through the Sheyenne River Valley is another highly recommended recreational activity. This valley is one of the loveliest in the region, extending from the Sheyenne National Grasslands through Valley City and to Lake Ashtabula. The lake is a great place for all kinds of fun, including camping, picnicking, fishing and swimming. There are 13 separate wildlife areas, providing excellent environments for many species of fauna.
