Car Hire Evry - Mini guide to Evry
Evry
Located 15.5 miles (25kms) from the centre of Paris, Evry is a community in the southern suburbs of France’s capital. In 1965, the construction of Evry Ville Nouvelle (‘new town’) was approved and the population has since increased from 8,000 to 82,000. As the average age of an Evry resident is only 26 years, this is the youngest town in the country.
Evry is a model of present-day architecture, the most exceptional example being the modern Cathedral of the Resurrection. This structure is one of a small number of 20th century cathedrals that are built in contemporary style. Inaugurated in 1996, it was visited by Pope John-Paul II in August 1997.
One of the biggest of its kind in Western Europe, the Moroccan-style Grand Mosque is another attraction in Evry. Its large, elegant prayer room can house several hundred worshippers, and the mosque was partially financed by the King of Morocco.
The Khan-Anh Pagoda will be the biggest pagoda on the continent when it is complete. Construction started on the pagoda in 1996 and the building is scheduled to be finished in 2009. The Buddha statue, which is four metres tall and weighs five tons, was delivered from Thailand in 2002. The pagoda will become home to the head office of the European Buddhist Congregation as well as a training school for future nuns and monks.
