The town of Euskirchen appears at first glance to be a normal spot to shop and live, however upon further inspection, you will find that you don’t have to look far to discover it’s rich history. Unlike many of the other towns and cities in western Germany, Euskirchen was granted town status in 1302, much later than the others surrounding it. With a population of 55,000, the town is large enough to have some diversity of character, while remaining small enough to enjoy a hometown atmosphere.

One of the more obvious landmarks is the ancient town wall with 3 of it’s large towers still standing 700 years after their erection. Visitors enjoy the history surrounding the town, and the close proximity to two of Germany’s largest cities: Bonn and Cologne. It is very normal to see visitors staying in Euskirchen, and then traveling to the city to shop and sightsee before returning to the quiet and affordability of a smaller town. The nearness also provides many options for transport, although a car is helpful in the town and then parking at a local train station for travel into one of the cities.

The popular Emil Fischer theatre hosts a wide variety of entertainment, and is named after the chemist of the same name who was born and raised in Euskirchen before winning the Nobel Prize in 1902. Other popular activities include bike riding and walking since the streets are considered safe and pretty to travel. The moderate weather is also a reason many people do a lot of outdoor activities, and it is not uncommon in the warmer months to experience live music or dance right on the streets.

The cost of living is relatively low in Euskirchen, and is a big reason why many residents live in the town, and then travel to one of the nearby cities for work. A large percentage of the population consider themselves commuters, and this is reflected in the busy rush hours. Many of the residents were born and raised in the town, and decided to stay because of its pleasant and relatively quiet culture.
