Estartit is located in the Spanish region of Catalonia at the northern end of the Costa Brava. It is an idyllic town, set at the foot of the impressive Montgri mountain range and graced with a spectacular coastline.
Mas Pinell, a 3100 metre stretch of fine sand, is the main beach at Estartit, and most visitors tend to focus their activities here. The Medes Islands lie only 1.5kms off the beach and a plethora of marine and terrestrial, plant and animal life exists within this nature reserve. The town is overlooked by a 13th century hilltop castle which is surrounded by panoramic views.
Exploring the town on foot is the perfect way to take in the narrow, medieval streets, colonnaded square, baronial mansions and impressive Gothic church.
In Estartit there are countless activities to fill the days. Sailing, fishing, scuba diving, windsurfing, water skiing and jet skiing are some of the delights on offer at the beaches and yacht marina. Glass-bottomed boat trips are a fantastic way to reach the Medes Islands and view the abundant marine life. Walking enthusiasts should explore the sandy tracks crossing the river plain of the Rio Ter. Estartit has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, but is quieter than nearby Lloret de Mar. Local Catalan cuisine can be found around the harbour area which has a less "touristy" feel to it.
The medieval town of Pals, 12kms southwest of Estartit, makes for a pleasant visit. Nearby Ullastret is a fascinating archaeological site. 50kms northwest of Estartit is the Salvador Dali Museum at Figueres, a must for art lovers. Barcelona, with its awe-inspiring Gaudi architecture, famous fountains and cathedral, lies only 150kms to the south.
Estartit is 40kms from Genoa Airport and 150kms from Barcelona Airport, which handles a large number of international flights. It can also be reached from other parts of Europe by bus.
