Mini guide to Essen
EssenThe city of Essen is situated in the heart of the North Rhine in Westphalia, Germany and boasts a population of just fewer than 600,000 residents. Thirteen of the country’s largest corporations make their home here as well, and for centuries has been known as a major industrial hub. Since the city borders extend 11 miles in one direction, and 13 in the other, it marks one of the larger areas in Germany and also borders the area known as Ruhr, one of the larges urban areas in Europe.
Archeologists have uncovered artifacts dating all the way back to 280,000 B.C., although it is questionable just how many people resided in Essen at the time. Much more is known during the 8th century and beyond when the first notable event occurred as the Bishop of Hildesheim founded a monastery for women in 845. In 1216, the monastery gained status as a prince residence and the town received its official charter a few years later in 1244. During the Thirty Years’ War, the Protestant city and the Catholic abbey opposed each other fervently, and in 1624 a law was passed closely monitoring churchgoing. Industrialization began with coal mining, and the city had earned quite a reputation for its rapid growth.
Today, iron and coal remain a part of the landscape, but other industries are making their mark. Because the city is so centrally located, transportation costs remain competitive, and the economy is doing relatively well compared to some of the neighboring cities. This is one of the main reasons families choose to reside in Essen, and find housing costs affordable and amenities close to home. Traveling the region, whether for business or pleasure, can be relatively easy by car, but other options are also available including public transportation.
The city is considered one of the greenest in Germany, despite it’s heavy industry, and visitors enjoy a temperate climate and the beautiful Ruhr river. Termperatures range from 35 degrees in January to 63 degrees in July, with the wettest month being August. Essen is certainly an interesting place to visit with the mix of industry, history, and agriculture, and you will never be bored.
