Positioned just 12km from the Spanish border, it is little surprise that Elva is one of the most heavily fortified towns in Europe. Built in the 17th century, its city walls feature star-shaped fortifications, two fortresses, moasts and bastions.
Within its city walls, the historical town is lined with narrow winding streets and lanes. At its centre is the Republica Square. Located on the square is the stunning 16th century Nossa Senhora da Assuncao Church. The interiors of this Manueline church are colourful, with blue and yellow tiles decorating its nave.
A Templar-style church is located behind. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolacao’s unique octagonal shape conceals rich interiors including 17th century tiles and painted columns.
Largo Santa Clara, a triangular plaza, is steeped in Moorish history. From here you can take in a 10th century archway which leads to the ruins of a castle constructed by the Moors.
The castle offers a fantastic viewing point for the town as well as the countryside that surrounds it. From here, you can view Elva’s most striking landmark: Amoreira Aquedect. Located beyond the city walls, this 7km waterway features 834 arches.
