East London is regarded as the Gateway City to the popular Eastern Cape tourist routes of South Africa, namely the Sunshine Coast and fantastic Wild Coast areas. It is an unhurried city with a pleasant atmosphere and good beaches.

The Border-Kei Region is rich in British and German Settler history as well as an entrenched political heritage that offers a kaleidoscope of encounters with Xhosa culture and tradition. East London is also a vibrant business centre, which offers affordable conference breakaways and a wide range of multi purpose conference venues.

The East London Museum provides a wonderful adventure into the past with stunning shipwreck and palaeontology sections. The museum also has an excellent display on the colourful Xhosa culture and some of the best examples of beadwork in the country. The Aquarium is the oldest in the country with a variety of fresh water and marine species. The Water World and Fun Park is a perfect adventure for the whole family with a super tube, speed slides, river cascades, paddling pools and a play park.

Wander along the coast and discover cliff side hikes and hidden resorts or meander through nearby forests and along country walks. Unique game viewing experiences, including whale watching and dolphin spotting, are offered at Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve and Mpongo Game Park, each within half an hour’s drive from East London. The Khayalabantu Cultural Village, 30km from East London, is a great place to get acquainted with the African spirit whilst viewing Xhosa dancing and feasting on Xhosa food.

East London has its own International Airport, but most visitors arrive from Europe and North America via the busy Johannesburg airport. It’s a full day’s driving to Cape Town or Johannesburg.
