One of Germany’s richest towns, Dusseldorf is an elegant and modern city on the banks of the Rhine river. It is well known for its harmonious blend of ‘old-world’ castles and churches, cosy pubs and taverns, and stunning natural landscape.

Dusseldorf is a city where everything is close together. Strollers on the Rhine embankment can admire the outlook over the Rhine and the art nouveau facades of Oberkassel. The Rhine Tower rises above the North Rhine-Westphalia government building, and on a clear day even the towers of Cologne’s cathedral are visible.There are many well-kept parks around the city, providing a haven for exercise and relaxation.

The Altstadt (old city) has been turned into a large open-air pedestrian mall with restaurants, clubs and stores. Dusseldorf is home to the largest Japanese population in Europe and boasts a number of excellent Japanese restaurants. There are also several old castles and churches in the area, as well as a striking Buddhist temple. The Altstadt has 260 home-brew taverns and pubs, thus gaining its reputation as ‘the longest bar in the world’.

Cinemas and theatres are spread all over the old town and the best district for dancing is the Bilk quarter.

With many luxury shops, Dusseldorf is the trendy German fashion centre. The Königsallee is one of Germany's most famous shopping areas and is a must for expensive fashion and antiques.
