Car Hire Dunkerque - Mini guide to Dunkerque
Dunkerque
Set in northern France, Dunkerque was bombed heavily during the early years of WWII. While the war cost the city much of its ancient infrastructure, it also earned Dunkerque a place in the pages of modern history annals, making this an ideal place to learn more about France's role in the war.
In the 17th century, Dunkerque was known for its maritime mercenaries; and Jean Bart was the most successful of these—accruing great wealth and infamy at the expense of Dutch and British fleets. Today, his statue presides over the square at the city centre.
A number of museums operate here. The Musée Portuaire offers tours of several recreated historic ships. In addition to an excellent collection of contemporary paintings and expositions, the Musée d'Art Contemporain also features a pleasant outdoor sculpture garden.
The British Memorial was erected about a mile south of the tourist office to honour the thousands of commonwealth troops that came to France's aid during WWII. The Memorial du Souvenir, next to the Musée d'Art Contemporain, focuses on the 1940 evacuation. At the Malo-les-Bains resort area, the beach (complete with promenade) was named Plage des Alliés in honour of the Allied troops who made the evacuation possible.
There are numerous modes of transport to Dunkerque. Regular trains connect the town with Lille and Calais. Car ferries from Dover dock at the port west of the city centre; and having a car is a convenient way to tour the region. We offer affordable car hire which can be conveniently booked online.
