Dundee Airport Guide

Car Hire

Tiny Dundee Airport, set on the Firth of Tay coastline overlooking the Tay Rail Bridge, lies just less than two miles from Dundee’s city centre. Its main attraction is its closeness to the Gleneagles Hotel and St Andrew’s, home to the world-famous golf course, the Ryder Cup and other great golfing tournaments. Onward transportation is by taxi, National Express bus or with car hire in Dundee Airport, available at the airport on arrival and giving the best modes of transport across the region.

Who to Book With
Car rental at the airport is via Hertz, Europcar or Arnold Clark, with the latter offering a meet-and-greet service. Europcar’s desk is found near the Arrivals exit. Booking in advance at times of major golf tournaments is a sensible idea. Cars are picked up from the outdoor parking area adjacent to the terminal.

Driving
Unless you’re visiting in the depths of the often harsh Scottish winter, driving in and around Dundee is straightforward as the city is linked to the A90 fast road and the M90 motorway to Aberdeen and Perth, and the A92 to Arbroath, Montrose and Fife to the south. Local drivers are generally civilised, and self-drive here is an enjoyable experience. Motorway speed limits are 70mph and dual carriageway A-road limits are 65mph. Seatbelts, if fitted, must be worn by all occupants at all times, and a warning triangle must be carried. Petrol stations in built-up areas are easily found and accept card payment, although they may be sparse and only accept cash in rural areas. Dundee city centre is a pedestrian zone, surrounded by car parks along the inner ring road and 536 metered on-street parking spaces.

See our guide to the UK for more information on driving here.

Transport

Passengers arriving at Dundee Airport are just a few minutes from their Dundee hotel or the city centre by taxi, bus or self-drive as the airport lies on the A85 Riverside Road ring road. For those travelling onwards by rail, Dundee’s rail station on the East Coast Line is a short ride away and is served by three operators, ScotRail, CrossCountry and East Coast.

Trains
There is no rail link with Dundee at the airport, but Dundee’s railway station in the city features ScotRail, East Coast and CrossCountry links to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, among other Scottish locations. On-the-day off-peak fares to Edinburgh are around £20, while Glasgow fares are around £30, but discounts are available with advance booking.

Taxis
The taxi rank here is just outside the Arrivals area, with several local taxi firms including TeleTaxis making the five-minute drive to the city centre. Booking in advance is essential as the airport only supports an average of two arriving flights a day.

Taxi prices:
Dundee Airport to Dundee city centre is about £3
Dundee Airport to St Andrew’s is about £30
Dundee Airport to Edinburgh is about £90

National Express Dundee’s 8X service links the airport with the city centre in just a few minutes, leaving half-hourly, with the journey taking around 10 minutes and costing about £1.50. Buses are low-level, giving easy access for disabled passengers. Visitors should check with their hotel for a shuttle bus service.
