Car Hire Dubrovnik - Mini guide to Dubrovnik
Known as the jewel of the Adriatic, the beautiful World Heritage listed Croatian city of Dubrovnik has drawn visitors since Roman times. People come to gaze at its azure seas or explore the medieval streets and imposing city walls. Its also a good base for exploring the stunning Dalmatian coast.
One of the main attractions for visitors are the historic walls which completely encircle the old city and define Dubrovnik. These fortifications are complemented by five medieval forts, two of which, St. Johns and Fort Revelin, host concerts during the summer. Other top sights are the Franciscan Monastery, complete with the oldest pharmacy in southern Europe and the Sponza Palace, with its 12th century archives. The cathedral and Rectors Palace are also not to be missed.
Dubrovnik is a city designed to be explored on foot, whether it is strolling along the walls or exploring the Sponzas narrow streets and squares. Or you can always join in the fun of the karnevo (carnival) and actively participate in the street parades and festivities.
The old city abounds with Croatian and international restaurants and boutiques, but should you tire of eating and shopping then you can visit a gym, take a sauna or try yachting at the marina.
Many visitors opt to see the nearby islands. Kolocep is renowned for its unspoilt beaches and dense pine forests. It also has many buildings left from its 15th century use as a retreat for Dubrovniks aristocracy. On nearby Sipan (Golden Island), you can see lush vineyards, primeval forests, ancient monuments and summer palaces.
Dubrovnik Airport is located 17kms away and has direct flights to cities across Europe. The nearest train station is in nearby Plee, connected by a regular bus service to the city. Arriving by boat is popular with car ferries running regularly between Italy and Dubrovnik and the Jadrolinija Steamship line, which travels between the city, Split and Rijeka.
