Exploring Dresden
A visit to the Hellerau district with its picturesque and architecturally interesting Garden City provides a worthwhile detour. This was the first garden town in Germany, an innovative project created by Hans Erlwein.
A special attraction leading out of the city is the Loschwitz cable railway, which connects Loschwitz with the Weisser Hirsch district (95 metres higher). The valley station is situated at Körnerplatz, where there is ample parking available.
The scenic Kirnitzsch valley is an ideal area for off-road explorations, with a stopover at Bad Schandau, nestled in the middle of the valley.
Nature-lovers should enjoy the spectacular Lichtenhain Waterfall in the Saxon Switzerland National Park.
Past the Altstadt are the Ostragehege Fields, lovely avenues lined with poplars and endless meadows. Over the river bank are the districts of Pieschen and Übigau, and Hans Erlweins Slaughter House complex.
Dresden's Emerald Isle is bordered to the west by the Alberthafen port, a busy centre of trade and transport.
A short, steep drive to the Waldschlösschen viewpoint offers a fantastic panorama over the Elbe and the city centre. The magnificent Elbe Palaces rest high above the former vineyards on the terraced hillsides.
