Digne is perched at the base of the French Alps in the Provence region. Roughly 70 miles south of Aix-en-Provence, Digne is known for its beautiful countryside and rich fossil deposits that have bolstered the success of local museums.
Digne is especially known for its thermal springs and thriving spa culture that has long been established. The baths were popular during Roman times, though they drifted into disuse after the fall of the Roman Empire. Today's spas arrived in the 1980s during a renaissance period for the local hot springs. Locals claim that the waters soothe rheumatism and respiratory problems, among other ailments.
The vast lavender fields are a major draw for tourists. The flowers bloom from June to October, and blossoms are harvested in the late summer. Touring this part of the countryside is aided by the use of a hire car, as it is difficult to coordinate these side trips with the local public transportation options.
The city centre is compact enough to cross on foot. The swift Bléone River cuts through the city centre and there are numerous trees lining the streets and walkways. A narrow-gauge train winds through the mountains between Nice and Digne; and this is by far the most alluring mode of transport into the city.
