Car Rental Londonderry - Exploring Londonderry
Set on a hill on the banks of the Foyle estuary, strategically close to the open sea, Derry is perfectly situated for a trip to nearby Donegal or for exploring the delights of the northwestern corner of Ireland.
The nearby north Antrim coast is arguably the most beautiful place in Ireland. Imposing cliffs which slide vertically down into the Atlantic Ocean are interspersed with sandy beaches. Inland lie some of the most impressive mountains in the province, including Slieve Snacht, whose importance throughout history is emphasised by the number of prehistoric relics found upon its slopes.
Also on the coast is the Giants Causeway. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this natural rock formation consists of roughly 40,000 tightly packed basalt columns that extend for 4.8kms along the coast. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the foot of the cliffs and disappear under the sea. They're mostly hexagonal, and some are as tall as 12m. Scientists estimate that they were formed by volcanic eruptions and cooling lava. The ancients, on the other hand, believed the rock formation to be the work of giants.
Over the border in Donegal is the unspoilt wilderness of Inishowen. The area gets its name from King Eoghain (Owen) who lived in the 5th century. The areas seascapes, mountains, valleys and woodlands are relatively undiscovered by tourists. Traditional ways of life still reign here, and this can be seen in the many pubs where impromptu music sessions are a nightly feature.
