Mini guide to Denver
Nestled up against the magnificent Rocky Mountains, Colorado's 'Mile High City' is Middle America's de facto hub of culture and commerce. It is the perfect destination for anyone who has trouble choosing between big-city and backwoods attractions.
The magnificent State Capitol is on the southeastern edge of downtown. West of the capitol are the Civic Center and the Denver Art Museum, which houses one of the largest Native American art collections in the world, with work on display from tribes throughout the country.
Lower Downtown, home to many of Denver's most historic buildings, sits between Larimer Square and Union Station at the northwestern corner of the downtown grid. Larimer St presents a tasty array of stylish shops, restaurants and bars.
A short bus ride away, the Black American Western Museum & Heritage Center is a very interesting place to spend an afternoon.
The South Platte River flows just north of downtown and is lined by trails and roads that snake into the mountains to the southwest.
In the hills just west of Denver is Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater. This 600 acre sensation should not be missed try making it to an evening performance in the outdoor amphitheater's 70 million year old rock formation.
The major suburbs in Denver are: Arvada, Aurora, Broomfield, Commerce City, Englewood, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Littleton, Thornton and Westminster.
