The old City Hall (Oude Stadhuis) is a building from the 16th century that has mullioned windows and a lot of decorative carvings that are very interesting. It has a Dutch Renaissance facade, and the old part of it was built in 1564, based on the design that was used for the town hall in Antwerp. They did more work on the Oude Stadhuis in 1734, and they added an extension to it in 1883, before they decided to move the city council to a building that was more modern.

You will definitely need to see the Peace Palace, which was built from 1907 – 1913 with help from donations that were given by Andrew Carnegie. The Palace is the home of the International Law Academy, International Court of Justice, Permanent Court of Arbitration, and a very big library. Thomas Mawson was the landscape artist that designed the surrounding gardens and courtyard.

The Inner Court and Hall of the Knights (Binnenhof and Ridderzaal) are the Dutch Parliament's and Prime Minister's official offices. The Count of Holland (William II) raised the first fortress on the site, and the Ridderzaal, in the beginning, was a banqueting hall for his son, which was built during the 13th century. They use it now for state occasions, but the regular guided tour leaves form the information centre in town.
