Car Hire Del Mar - Mini guide to Del Mar
The Southern California Railroad started from San Diego to San Bernardino in 1882. Theodore Loop, who had been working on the railroad was entranced by what he described as 'the most attractive place on the entire coast,; He soon started building a city of tents which his wife Ella, called Del Mar from a poem she knew,' The Fight on Paseo Del Mar .'
Del Mar's longest serving landmark, the Powerhouse, has mirrored many economic uses from power station in the earlier 1900's to a nightclub in the 50's , to it's time as a desalination plant for the communities water. By 1983 , Del Mar city decided to buy the Powerhouse with it's park areas and the next 17 years saw the building of the Powerhouse Community Centre. The delectably cool , covered verandas , with picture perfect trellis framed palms and sea surf to gaze upon entices the visitor, just as it did Del Mar's founders , to sit and enjoy the beauty, just as it must have stirred the judges of the San Diego Architectural Foundation when they bestowed the Orchid Award for Historic Preservation in 2000.
Attractions.
The 2.5 miles of sandy beach are obviously the main attraction at Del Mar , with fantastic surf, boogie boarding and swimming and anything and everything to do with surf, sea and sand. Pet owners are permitted to allow their dogs a free run at certain times of year, and the Powerhouse Community Centre provides wonderful facilities and a venue for all private and public occasions.
