Car Rental Cyprus - Exploring Cyprus
The prevailing political situation in Cyprus means youll have to choose to spend your holiday in either the Turkish occupied north or independent south. Both have their own unique culture and attractions, worth hiring a car for.
South
The best beaches, many resorts and little fishing villages can be found near Lanarca and Limmasol. Outside the city of Lemesos, the restored Kolossi Castle towers over a landscape of vineyards. Further along the coast and slightly inland, Pafos has almost escaped the commercial development of tourism and among the souvenir shops you'll find the ruins of Saranta Kolones.
The mountains of the Troödos region, in the country's south, are unforgettable. Troödos is littered with 15th-century frescoed monasteries, notably Kykkos monastery.
The Akamas Peninsula, on the west coast, is one of the last wild and unspoiled places on the Cypriot coast, including the Baths of Aphrodite, and excellent walking trails.
North (Turkish)
Once the richest city in the world, Famagusta (Gazimagusa), on the east coast, is now both a decaying old town surrounded by a Venetian city wall. Other attractions include
the Cathedral of St Nicholas and Othello's Tower.
North of Famagusta, Salamis was Cyprus' most important pre-Christian city, and it's still the country's best archaeological site with a restored Roman amphitheatre.
Kyrenia, in the middle of the north coast is perhaps the most pleasant coastal resort on the island with its atmospheric old quarter, Kyrenia Castle, and bustling modern waterfront tourist development.
