Most of the attractions are found along the spectacular Dalmatia coast. Once again Europeans are flocking back to sun themselves and enjoy the charm and medieval attractions of this plucky country.
En-route to the coast the road passes one of the countrys best kept secrets. Pletvica national park comprises of a dozen stepped turquoise lakes cascading over limestone waterfalls and staggered across several kilometers of pristine forest. A wander through the paths and boardwalks is unmatched in beauty.
Just offshore from Dubrovnik is Lokrum Island, a popular day-trip with its a national park, great beaches, nudist beach, botanical garden and the ruins of a medieval Benedictine monastery.
Korcula Island (further north), also has a medieval feel with many superb buildings and a quaint old town. Lumbarda is a picturesque settlement on the island, and there are many sandy coves and an occasional nudist beach.
The Roman ruins at Solin (near Split), are fascinating and include the remains of a basilica, amphitheatre and cathedral. Nearby, the ancient surviving settlement of Trogir is curious.
Rovinj is a picturesque fishing village in Istria (north coast adjacent to Trieste), set among wooded hills with lovely vistas of the dotted islands offshore. The town has some impressive ancient buildings and a laid-back atmosphere.
Rab Island, in the Kvarner island group (north-west) is one of the most enticing in the Adriatic. Rocky and covered in pine is has a small town in a sheltered harbour with a distinctly Venetian influence.
