Car Hire in Crete - Getting to Crete
There are only two ways to reach Crete, by air or boat. Unless youre arriving on a package or charter flight in the season, youll probably have to catch a flight to Athens first and then connect. From here you can fly to Iraklio or Hania. Iraklio handles the bulk of traffic and international flights. From here taxis are the common means of reaching your reort/hotel, or pre-arranged shuttle service.
Despite its relatively remote location from the rest of the Aegean and Mediterranean, car ferries arrive from Brindisi, Ancona, Bari or Venice in Italy. More frequent services (several times daily in season) depart from Piraeus harbour, just to the south of Athens, but there are also departures from Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Kalamata and Glythio, plus some of the Cyclade islands and Kythira, but some ferries take much longer than others to reach Crete. Very little runs between November and April.
It is also possible to catch a ferry to Cyprus from Crete.
