Car Rental Corsica - Exploring Corsica
Bonifacio is the fortressed pearl of the far south, surrounded by turquoise water that stretches out to the Italian island of Sardinia. The ancient citadel and Upper Town (Ville Haute) have sweeping panoramic views out to sea. Highly recommended is the route to Pertusato lighthouse, with sensational views of Bonifacio.
The Niolo region, around Calacuccia, northwest of Corte, is the ideal area for outdoor sports enthusiasts. Highlights here include the breathtaking peaks of Cuccia and Calasima, the canyons of the Ruda and the Frascaghju, as well as Corsicas highest mountain, Monte Cinto.
Filitosa is the islands famous prehistoric site, home to mysterious ancient statuary dating back to the early Neolithic era. Impressive granite menhir statues of the megalithic era stand 2-3 metres high, and have been carved into human faces and figures.
Not far from Filitosa, Sartene is reminiscent of what Corsica used to be like, with traditions that go back to the Middle Ages. On Good Friday, the Procession du Catenacciu takes place, wherby an anonymous, barefoot penitent carries a huge 32kg (70lb) oak cross through the town, dragging a heavy 14kg (30lb) chain at his feet.
For spectacular wilderness scenery, visit the Parc Naturel Regional de Corse, with its deep forests of laricio pine and beech, granite moonscapes, windswept craters, glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks.
