Car Rental Corfu - Exploring Corfu
Over on the west coast youll find Corfu's best beaches and the least development. Agios Georgios is a haven for watersports enthusiasts, and nearby Afionas has Neolithic ruins and sweeping coastal views. Paleokastritsa is the largest resort, somehow it has retained its beauty, boasting a verdant mountain backdrop and excellent snorkelling (including grottoes and caves). You can spot excellent sunsets on Pelekas or naked bodies at Myrtiotissa.
If you take a break from the sun and sea, the interior is a rewarding day trip and a chance to escape the crowds. Life inland seems like it was when Lawrence Durrell lived on Corfu in the 1930s. Mt Pantokrator is the island's highest peak and good for hiking, with marked trails. There are several villages here which are a wonderful surprise if you seek out off-the-beaten-track places. Look out for Old Perithia. Similarly the coastal fishing village of Astrakeri is still a well kept secret.
You may also want to catch the ferry to some of the other lovely Ionian islands. Paxi is the closest, and slightly upmarket with its pretty harbour at Gaïos. Most the island is easily walkable among the rolling olive groves. Lefkada is more rural and unspoilt by tourism, with many satellite islands. Ithaki has unspoilt, rugged natural terrain and Zakynthos had wonderful Venetian architecture until the devastating earthquake of 1953.
