Mini guide to Corbeil
Corbeil
Located in the suburbs of Paris, Corbeil (often referred to as Cobeil-Essonnes) sits roughly 18 miles south of the capital. Most visitors to Corbeil use the city as a base from which to launch daytrips into Paris.
Corbeil's premiere piece of architecture is the Cathedral of Saint-Spire, which has enjoyed its status as an historic monument since the mid 19th century (the cathedral itself was built in the 10th century). The 700-year-old gates at the former monastery are still intact.
The mill at Corbeil, or the Grands Moulins, supplied Paris with processed flour for centuries. This facility was eventually sold off in 1881, and it was subsequently destroyed in a fire soon afterward. In the early 1900s, the mill was rebuilt and remains open for public tours.
Other historic monuments in Corbeil include the Church of Saint-Etienne; the market hall (built in the mid 19th century); and the Church of Saint-John. Construction on the latter began under the patronage of the Knights of Malta in the 11th century and it has been through many phases of use, not only as a religious shrine, but also as a storage building and a museum. The interior is currently closed to the public.
Corbeil is serviced by the Corbeil-Essonnes metro station, located along Paris' RER line D. There is also a Corbeil stop along the Transilien Paris-Lyon underground rail line. A hire car is ideal for daytrips to Paris. We offer convenient online booking for hire cars from Corbeil.
