Car Rental Copenhagen - Exploring Copenhagen
A car isnt much use in central Copenhagen, and walking is the only way to get a feel for the citys atmosphere. However, some of its popular attractions are more than a mere walk, and other drawcards are found further a field.
No one comes to Copenhagen without seeking out the sea-facing Little Mermaid statue inextricably linked to the legend of the city. If it werent for the interesting fortifications of Kastellet nearby, the effort getting to this overrated attraction would be a waste of time!
Christianshavn, across the Inderhavnen waterway (20 minutes walking), was established as a commercial suburb in the 17th century and now has an eclectic mix of artist and yuppy residents among its outstanding features: Vor Frelsers Kirke and the Orlogmuseet (Royal Danish Naval Museum). Wandering around is a quiet respite from the city, but most people come to curiously seek out the bizarre hippy community of Christania who occupied the unused army-base land 30 years ago and continue to live without amenities, in self-made shacks, selling dope and crafts, living an alternative lifestyle, untroubled by the municipality.
North-west of Copenhagen (40kms) is one of Denmarks finest castles at Hillerød - Frederiksborg Slot. This Dutch Renaissance castle is beautifully located on a lake, and is now an outstanding museum, with over 70 well furnished rooms.
The small island of Møn, to the south of Zeeland, has striking chalk cliffs at Møns Klint, nice beaches and lovely forests, some medieval churches and an unhurried atmosphere among its small population. Also nearby is the Viking ring fortresses of Trelleborg. A small working museum has been reconstructed giving an insight into Viking life.
